mushi mushi.

mushi mushi is my brainchild, dedicated to creating functional yet playful ceramic dinnerware. Inspired by my time hosting dinner parties, my pieces are made by hand with love.

Role: Creator & Ceramicist | Duration: 1 year

My pieces are inspired by my experiences living in New York City. For 3 years, I woke up to the sounds of cars honking, walked through seas of pigeons, and encountered the city's amusing absurdities. I channeled these memories into my work, creating pieces that are not only weirdly endearing but also useful.

THE INSPIRATION

Hosting monthly dinner parties inspired me to create dinnerware that I could use with my guests. My primary audience consists of women in their 20s to mid-30s, and I validated this hypothesis by selling my pieces at a street fair.

THE AUDIENCE

My pieces are both handbuilt and hand-thrown using stoneware clay.

Safety - I make sure the glazes I use are food safe by testing for acid resistance. I squeeze lemon juice on a piece and leave it overnight to see if any residue leaches.

Cleaning - My pieces are all dishwasher safe. I make sure of this through an alkaline test where I submerge my pieces in a boiling mixture of soda ash and water. If the piece does not change color after 6 hours, the piece can withstand dishwashing detergents.
